Pears Watercolor Painting

Pears watercolor painting (7.75 x 7.75) is done on Sennelier watercolor paper - a great paper to work on.   There is a March challenge from the group reading the book The Artists Way, by Julia Cameron and I've tried to figure out how I can use this for one of the phrases.....but it's just not going to work.   Some of the phrases:  at the end of the rainbow ( I thought because they're so golden in color) ..... or the wrong side of the tracks (because of those background lines).....    Too much of a stretch?  ...and speaking of stretching your mind......

"Once the mind has been stretched by a new
idea, it will never again return to its original size."

It is an emotional experience of the kind that is spoiled by words.

The Usual Suspects Watercolor Painting

The Usual Suspects  watercolor painting is 24 x 11.25 inches on Arches watercolor paper.  This reference was from a Wet Canvas weekend drawing event from a few weeks ago that I wanted to paint and finally got to last night. And on the subject of suspects...a different viewpoint:

Who naught suspects is easily deceived.
Petrarch

Gladiolas Watercolor Painting

Gladiolas watercolor painting is also from a Wet Canvas weekend drawing event hosted by Oty.  She had some wonderful photos of Romania, her previous home (she now lives in Greece).  It's wonderful to see photos from hosts from around the world.  :)

Flowers are those little colorful beacons of the sun
from which we get sunshine when dark,
somber skies blanket our thoughts.  ~Dodinsky

Sunflower Field Watercolor Painting

Sunflower Field watercolor painting - this is cropped down from a 12 x 16 inch size, so I'm not sure what the exact measurements are  --probably 12 x 12 I would guess.  This is from a Wet Canvas weekend drawing event (WDE) --references and hosted by Oty.   I can't seem to pass up a sunflower....  This wasn't perfect, (why it was cropped)  but I learned this morning reading from The Artists Way, by Julia Cameron,  that striving for perfection leads to inactivity....we become afraid to do anything.   And of course in doing, is how we learn, grow.  So, in the spirit of that...I am posting it.   Even things that don't turn out as we want teach us something.   And I love this quote:

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering.
There is a crack in everything,
That's how the light gets in.
~Leonard Cohen

Life's A Bowl of Cherries Watercolor Painting

Life's A Bowl of Cherries watercolor painting (8 x 10) on Arches 140 pound paper.    I read a quote that said it's not a bowl of cherries, there's bad stuff in there, and then of course Erma Brombeck's famous "if life's a bowl of cherries, what am I doing here in the pits?" but I like this the best:

Life is just a bowl of cherries
don't take it serious,
it's mysterious.
Life is just a bowl of cherries, so live and laugh
laugh at love, love a laugh,
laugh and love.
Bob Fosse

Anhinga Bird Watercolor Painting

Anhinga Bird watercolor painting, part of a Wet Canvas weekend drawing event hosted by Li Newton (9 x12) this was part of 16 references of Costa Rica by the host.    It looks very much like a cormorant.  On Block Island I tried to get a nice photo of the cormorants that also dry their wings on the rocks after they go 'fishing'.

It is not only fine feathers that make fine birds

God's Candy Watercolor Painting

God's Candy watercolor painting (9 x 12 inches) for the monthly Art Right Now Meetup group for the month of March.  The word is "candy" and I contemplated not even attending because I couldn't think of what to do, and then suddenly I remembered in one of Dr. Amen's books his reference to the benefits of blueberries and referred to them as "God's candy".....     February challenge is done, and I have to say it was hard but very beneficial, in many ways.  I won second prize in the Watercolor Society's Bon Appetit show   for the Strawberries painting (for the word sweet).    Another painting has given me an idea for a children's book, which I'm rough drafting.    I also highly recommend the book that has stimulated all of this:  The Artists Way by Julia Cameron

You ought to have seen what I saw on my way
To the village, through Mortenson's pasture to-day:
Blueberries as big as the end of your thumb,
Real sky-blue, and heavy, and ready to drum
In the cavernous pail of the first one to come!
And all ripe together, not some of them green
And some of them ripe! You ought to have seen!
Robert Frost
Blueberries.

Leaping Horse Watercolor Painting

Leaping Horse watercolor painting (9 x 12) is the last of the February challenge (late).  I finished this last night and then hated it so I put it in a tub of water and washed almost all of it out....just a very faint shadow of what was there and repainted it and am much happier with it now.

The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse's ears.

Music Watercolor Painting (February Challenge)

"Music" watercolor painting (9 x 12) is part of the February challenge...yes, I know it's March, but I'm not going to leave this challenge undone.  I have one more painting for the word "leap" which I will post when it's done.   It's very difficult to get a painting done every day....and there were some things which I wanted to paint but didn't have the time, so I am glad the challenge is over.   Through the challenge (and The Artists Way book) I have had one of the paintings win second place in a show, and I was sparked with an idea for a children's book which I rough-drafted yesterday and am very excited about.

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
