Just Peaches Watercolor Painting

"Just Peaches" Watercolor Painting is 7 x 10 inches. This is also from a Wet Canvas weekend drawing event.

Some thoughts on worry:

Jesus said, "You cannot add any time to your life by worrying
about it." Matthew 6 :27
David said, "He leads me beside the still waters."
Psalm 23:2
Arthur Hays Sulzberger, publisher of the New York Times during World War II adopted
this motto..... "one step enough for me"
"Lead kindly Light...
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me."

Cat in a Chair Watercolor Painting

"Cat in a Chair" watercolor painting is 7 x 10 inches. This was from a Wet Canvas weekend drawing event for December 25th - a busy week but I managed to get this done! There was also an interesting challenge by the host Elizabeth for a vision board The second challenge was to depict your goal for this year, and I think this cat represents my goal for more "me" time --- not necessarily sitting, but exercising, making healthy choices, reducing stress, and enjoying the moment.

I believe you can accomplish whatever you can visualize. I watched a PBS special by Dr. Wayne Dwyer "NO EXCUSES" and he talked about the movie "Wire" where the man visualized himself for years walking a tightrope between the twin towers, and despite all the obstacles he encountered, he did it.

Flame Rose Watercolor Painting

Flame Rose watercolor painting is 7 x 10 inches on Arches 140 pound paper. My grandson thought it looked like a fire... so that's why it has that name....

"...A flower unplucked is but left to the falling,
And nothing is gained by not gathering roses.'
Robert Frost, "Asking For Roses"

Coast Guard House, Block Island Watercolor Painting

Coast Guard House, Block Island, Watercolor Painting is 10 x 14 inches. This is a redo of another painting. Looking for another painting, I looked at the other and said it needed to be scrapped. It is 300 pound paper, so very strong, so I put it in a bath and scrubbed it all out until it was light enough to paint over. This is overlooking New Harbor on Block Island with the Rose of Sharon bushes framing the view.

Some thoughts on enduring adversity:

"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant;
if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome."
...Anne Bradstreet

A thought on patience:

If patience is worth anything,
it must endure to the end of time.
And a living faith will last in the midst of the blackest storm.
....Mahatma Gandhi

Yellow Rose in Shadow.... this watercolor is 7.75 x 7.75 inches on Sennelier 140 pound paper.

"Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen."
Leonardo da Vinci

Sketches from Punta Cana

Back from "vacation".... which I put quotes...suffice to say it was a disappointment. I did do some sketching. The first palm tree sketched while sitting at the pool - I wanted to get that shadow. The second is from our patio and the birds and flower are just Chinese style painting.

We did have a parrot land on our patio while my grandsons were eating
some pineapple - they wanted a piece - so we placed a piece in a dish and fed it to them. My daughter managed to snap a picture of it --maybe a future painting.....

Thought for today from Ecclesiastes (3:14), The Message:

whatever God does, that's the way it's going to be, always.

Water Lily Painting on Canvas

Water Lily Painting is an 8 x 10 inch acryla goauche on canvas with a 3/4 inch edge that is painted as well, so no frame is necessary. I will add a final coat of varnish on this piece.

can the wild water-lily restore.

Reflection Watercolor Painting

Reflection Watercolor Painting is 12 x 16 inches on Arches 140 pound paper.... duck with reflection in the water....and no, I am not sick of painting ducks..... This was done on hot pressed paper. I ordered this hot pressed paper by mistake - it has a smooth surface, and cold pressed paper a rougher surface, so the paint reacts differently, so a little bit of a challenge.

"Reflect upon your present blessings - of which every man has many - no on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some."

WaterFire and the Debut of Little Duck's book, The Waterfire Duck

Kiki and I signing books on September 19th, Little Duck's debut!

I don't usually put photos on my blog, but this is related to a lot of work I have been doing on Little Duck's new book over the past year, The WaterFire Duck, Kiki Latimer the author and I the illustrator.

If you are in the area, I would like to invite you to come to the next WaterFire - Saturday, October 10th to enjoy the festivities, and where we will be signing the book again. The book is an excellent way to take home the magic of WaterFire with you.

Fish Watercolor Painting

Fish Watercolor Painting is about 7 X 9 inches and on Arches 140 pound paper. This was from photo reference of last weekend's WDE (weekend drawing event) at Wet Canvas. This fish had a beautiful almost neon color that I tried very hard to duplicate.... and I never resolved it fully, although he looks very grumpy and cute even so..... like how I feel before my first cup of coffee in the morning. Maybe he would be cute on a coffee mug.

For every man there exists a bait which he cannot resist swallowing.

Block Island View Watercolor Painting

Block Island View Watercolor Painting is 12 x 16 inches. This was originally started on a cold blustery September day. The sun was warm, but the wind was hard, especially trying to paint. But a gorgeous view and those clouds! They changed several times while I was painting.

life was, 'thank you', that would suffice."

Artists on the Beach Watercolor Painting

Artists on the Beach Watercolor Painting is 7 x 10 inches on Arches 140 pound paper. This is Block Island and two of the group of plein air painters working last week. Usually Block Island is a week of relaxation and fun, however, in anticipation of the upcoming signing for the book, news media interviews, TV interviews.... it was not.

Still riding the "high" from last Saturday's premier of our book "The WaterFire Duck" and the signing. What an evening! The Mayor of Providence, David Cicciline, was there and we signed a book for him, the author and I were honored with lighting the torches for the boats - marching through the crowds with our torches, down to the water. What an amazing feeling, and we didn't want to relinquish our torches!! For those of you who have never experience WaterFire, it is a work of art that involves all of the sense - smell, sight, sound - a huge party that extends for over a mile in the city with thousands of people - smiling and happy!! That night they had canoes with koi fish lit up on the water also, Jack-o-lanterns carved out by the Roger Williams Zoo, Lion Dancers..... You can investigate a little more at WaterFire.org A great reason to visit the city of Providence (among other things here!)

Still Life Jugs Watercolor Painting

Still Life Watercolor Painting ... this is 7 x 11 inches on Arches 140 pound paper. This was from our week of plein air painting, but this day was overcast and very windy so we all painted inside of Summer Hill, Block Island. I found these little treasures on a shelf in the kitchen, sort of representative of the island itself and its treasures you have to search for and find.

Sunflower Watercolor Painting

Sunflower Watercolor Painting is 7 x 10 inches on Arches 140 pound paper. This is from a Wet Canvas weekend drawing event reference photo.

The challenge by the host this weekend was "As we pause to reflect the tragedies of 9/11... tell us what makes you happy about painting it, or what great memory or feeling does it evoke as you style it as your own?" What makes me happy about this painting is the beautiful colors and fragile beauty of this flower --- a moment in time so fleeting expressed and preserved on paint and paper.

Monarch Butterfly Watercolor Painting

Monarch Butterfly Watercolor Painting measures 7 x 10 inches on Arches 140 pound paper. This was also one with no preliminary drawing but just putting paint down, which is completely different for me. For a first attempt at this, I'm not unhappy with it at all. The attempt was to capture the sunlit day, and I believe it does.

Shepherd Watercolor Painting

Shepherd Watercolor Painting is 3.5 x 5 inch card (NFS) for a friend whose husband lost his mother this week. I am trying a new technique with this, and also another butterfly painting that I will post tomorrow. Another friend gave me a book with notes from Charles Hawthorne. So many things he said resonated with me as true, so I'm giving this a go.

The Scripture verse inside the card, such a beautiful description of God's loving care:

"Like a shepherd, he will care for his flock,
gathering the lambs in his arms,
hugging them as he carries them....."
Isaiah 40:11

Cat Face Watercolor Painting

Cat Face watercolor painting is 7.75 x 7.75 inches on Sennelier 140 pound watercolor paper. This is my brother and sister-in-law's cat. They live in New Hampshire and were not able to get to my art show in April in Rhode Island, and they wanted to buy the Cat Face watercolor painting, but it was sold.... So this is their little cat's face - and a Christmas Present for them (not a surprise if they're reading this!). At our family reunion in July I took photos of her so I could do this. If you are interested in a portrait of your cat, dog, please send an email for details.
