Wildflowers Watercolor Still Life Painting

Wildflowers in a still life watercolor painting recently completed, and is available for sale. The copyright watermark does not appear on the original painting. The addition of the watermark is beause of my understanding that an orphan works bill has passed one part of the legislature, and I am concerned, along with a lot of other artists about the potential of my art work being classified as "orphaned". If you are an artist and have not yet voiced your opinion, here is the web address to do that.

Appreciation is a wonderful thing:
It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well

Pumpkins Watercolor Painting

Pumpkins watercolor painting measures 8 X 10.5" and is SOLD.

Thought for today:

"An optical impression is produced on our organs of sight which makes us classify as light, half-tone or quartertone, the surfaces represented by colour sensations. So that light does not exist for the painter." ...Paul Cezanne

"Still Point", Block Island View Watercolor Painting

This watercolor painting was done on Block Island, facing west toward Montauk, Long Island. The Wash Pond from the previous posting is just below the second hill. This is a very typical scene on Block Island, rolling hills, rock walls, ocean and ponds. The painting measures 12 X 16" and is available for sale.

Thought for today: I call this painting "Still Point", the idea from a book I read called "The Velveteen Woman", by Brenda Waggoner, in which the author is talking about what is being "real" ---like the question the Velveteen Rabbit has in the children's book.

"Still points are places that help us become more aware
of God in everyday life. They allow us to wrap our hearts
in a blanket of renewal and provide a kind of
spiritual retreat from the noise of the world."

"Wash Pond, Block Island" Watercolor Painting

This watercolor painting is Wash Pond on the western side of Block Island, a beautiful site looking towards Montauk, Long Island and where the sailboats enter into The Great Salt Pond, New Harbor. This was a beautiful spot to paint, just my fellow plein air painters and myself. As we watched the sun go down, it just got more spectacular. The temptation is to keep changing your painting to match the changing view..... I did take lots of photos.

Thought for today:

"Nature which governs the whole will soon change
all things which you see, and out of their substance will make other
things and again other things... in order that the world may be ever new."
....Marcus Aurelius

New Harbor, Block Island, Boat Watercolor Painting

This new watercolor painting of a boat in New Harbor, Block Island measures 10.5 X 15" and is available for sale for $158. The painting was done "plein air" while in Block Island, while at The Oar restaurant area overlooking the water. It was windy, and the water choppy, and the boat was moving.... so it took a while. The cost includes a double mat with plexi-glass, foam board backing and brushed gold frame, using archival quality framing.

My thought for today is an excerpt from a poem I wrote while on Block Island:

A glimpse of heaven...
starry nights
pounding surf
and smell of sea

....a taste of what's to come.

New Watercolor Painting "Ducks"

This new watercolor painting of ducks measures 7 X 10" is available for sale and is $105 ...I like how they seem to be talking to one another.

While at Block Island plein air painting there was a goose who had a strange sound---like he was laughing in a mocking way. Every few minutes he'd erupt in his "laughter" and my fellow painters all started laughing. It's funny how laughter (or what's perceived as laughter) spreads. You can't help yourself....it just bubbles out. It reminds me of the poem "Solitude" by Ella Wheeler Wilcox ...

Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
Weep, and you weep alone;
For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.
Sing, and the hills will answer;
Sigh, it is lost on the air;
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
But shrink from voicing care.

Rejoice, and men will seek you;
Grieve, and they turn and go;
They want full measure of all your pleasure,
But they do not need your woe.
Be glad, and your friends are many;
Be sad, and you lose them all,—
There are none to decline your nectared wine,
But alone you must drink life’s gall.

Feast, and your halls are crowded;
Fast, and the world goes by.
Succeed and give, and it helps you live,
But no man can help you die.
There is room in the halls of pleasure
For a large and lordly train,
But one by one we must all file on
Through the narrow aisles of pain.

White Horses Fantasy Watercolor Painting

This "White Horse Fantasy" watercolor painting measures 12 X 16 ". This is a painting just finished the night before my trip to Block Island this past week. I used an abstract background for the fantasy feel of these beautiful horses. It is available for sale $288 with double mat, foamboard backing, plexi-glass and framed with a brushed gold metal frame, all archival quality framing materials.

Thoughts today are on rest....

"For a field to bear fruit, it must occasionally lie fallow.
And for you to be healthy, you must rest."
[God] will bring rest to your mind, to your body, and most of all to your soul.
He will lead you to green pastures. (Psalm 23:2)...."

"Sunset on the Beach" Watercolor Seascape Painting

"Sunset on the Beach" watercolor seascape painting is 11 X 15 just completed this week. Available for sale, also. Probably fitting that this is my last blog for the week since I am off to Block Island for a week of plein air painting. I will be painting, but just not with a computer access to put my paintings here until I return. I will check in on a library computer to answer any email questions.

Thought for today:

"True contentment is a real, even active virtue--
not only affirmative but creative. It is the power
of getting out of any situation all there is in it."

"Baby Deer" Watercolor Painting

'Baby Deer' watercolor painting measure 5 X 7" and is available for sale. The background was done in an abstract way using my "tequila" mixture---not really tequila, of course, but is alcohol and salt and dropping color on the painting.

Thought for today,

"It is always wise to stop wishing for things long enough
to enjoy the fragrance of those now flowering."

"Fiddler in the Sky" Watercolor Painting

"Fiddler in The Sky" is a watercolor painting of a musician just finished and is 5 X 7" from a reference image from Wet Canvas, weekend drawing event. When I first painted her, she was lost with the background behind her of mountains, water which, even though deliberately blurry, detracted from her image, so I experimented with a lively kind of background.

Great Southern Butterfly Watercolor Painting

This Southern Butterfly watercolor painting is 12 X 9 " and was just finished last night. My grandson and I went again to the Flutterby Exhibit yesterday and I got more beautiful photographs of the different butterflies. My two year old grandson ran when one started chasing him - he liked his shirt, I think.

"Feeding Time" Kittens Watercolor Painting

"Feeding Time" watercolor painting, measuring 8 X 10 ", was just finished. I experimented with the colors on this, and think it was successful in giving a richness to the kittens fur. This painting is sold.

Thought for today is from C.S. Lewis "Out of the Silent Planet"

"How could we endure to live and let time pass
if we were always crying for one day or one year to come back--
if we did not know that every day in a life fills the whole life
with expectation and memory and that these are that day."

Tall Ship, Newport, Watercolor Painting

This watercolor painting of one of the tall ships visiting Newport, RI, last year is 10 X 14" in size. You can barely make out the crew on the masts.....

My thought for today is from a book I'm reading by Julia Cameron called "The Writing Diet". She says that writing is like meditation, in that it--among many positive things---gets us in touch with a power greater than ourselves. She also says the same thing about walking - that we intuitively start to walk when we are trying to solve a problem and that the habit of walking, in addition to improving our physical health, helps us yield to creative breakthroughs. She quotes St. Augustine who said, "When we walk the two halves of our brain converse."

"Babies" Duckling Watercolor Artwork

I loved the play of light on these furry baby ducklings. This animal artwork watercolor measures 10 X 5 1/2" and is done on Arches 140 pound paper, just finished this week. This was also for a Wet Canvas weekend drawing event. This painting is sold.

Thought for today....

"God can do things that are not possible for people to do."
Luke 18:27

"God always rejoices when we dare to dream. In fact, we are much like God when we dream. The Master exults in newness. He delights in stretching the old. He wrote the book on making the impossible possible."....Max Lucado "And te Angels Were Silent"

Seaweed, Watercolor Painting

"Seaweed" is a watercolor 8 X 10" done on Arches 140 pound paper. I used a different technique for this painting, posted the week before on Wet Canvas. It was a challenge on the Wet Canvas weekend drawing event.

Thought for today....
"Stir up the gift of God which is in you." 2 Timothy 1:6
Max Lucado in "Cure for the Common Life", says we have been entrusted with a "key task" in the project that God has of a spiritual house, "building it brick by brick and life by life.... Examine your tools and discover it. Your ability unveils your destiny."

Great Blue Heron Watercolor Seascape Painting

Finished this week, this great blue heron watercolor seascape painting is a small 5 X 7" done on Arches 140 pound paper. This is a Wet Canvas weekend drawing event reference photo. This painting is sold.

Thought for today...... in line with the Jan Phillips video from yesterday.....

"Being an artist is like being an Olympic athlete: years of sweat and dedication to build up skills, lots of sacrifice along the way, lots of obstacles to overcome. All that, and no gold, silver, or bronze medals." ...Theresa Bayer

White Flower Watercolor Painting

White flower watercolor painting measures 8 X 10", on arches 140 pound paper. I had originally done the background in black, sea green and blue.... but found it too bland. When I added the magenta, it gave it a richer color. This is from the weekend drawing event at Wet Canvas.

My thought for today, especially if you are an artist, is a video that someone shared on Wet Canvas this weekend about the creation of art and titled "You are Worth the Time"
by Jan Phillips.

Seascape Watercolor "Sailing in to New Harbor"

New seascape watercolor measures 11 X 13", done on Arches 140 pound paper. The spot for this painting was one of those rolling green hills of Block Island, Rhode Island, at the end of the day sailing in to New Harbor for the evening.

Thoughts about the sea. The Dead Sea is fascinating being so dense one can sit in it and even a non swimmer can stay afloat. On a trip there I tried it. There are showers for after you get out to get rid of the awful smell. Fed by Israel's Jordan River, the Dead Sea has no outlet, so all of the fresh water flowing in grows stagnant. Our lives can be like this......
