Gorilla, Animal Artwork Watercolor

This new artwork, a gorilla in watercolor, is a 5 X 7" on Arches 140 lb paper, from a reference photo for the weekend drawing event at Wet Canvas. The challenge was to use two complimentary colors - so I chose yellow and purple, and once I started it, didn't like it.....but I kept going with it. Sometimes a painting goes through an "awful stage" ! At that point sometimes you feel like you've lost control of the painting and it's kind of doing it's own thing. I did use some black and white, and that brought out his soulful expression.

Thought for today is on a Scripture "We are His workmanship" (Ephesians 2:10) and are from Max Lucado. He says the word workmanship is from the Greek work poeo or poetry. "We are God's poetry! What Longfellow did with pen and paper, our Maker does with us. We express his creative best. "

Panda Watercolor Painting

This Panda watercolor painting measures 11 X 15 on Arches 300 lb paper. The background of bamboo was done using a Chinese painting technique....wanted to make sure this cute guy had plenty of bamboo to eat!

From "Chinese Brush Painting Techniques", author Stephen Cassettari says of bamboo.... "Many Chinese artists will spend their artistic life painting this one subject in its infinite variations. Being hollow, bamboo symbolises the tranquility of inner peace, when one is empty of worldly concern. Bending with the wind and snow, it does not break but returns to its upright position when the wind and snow stop. Thus it combines flexibility with honesty, with the quality of remaining true to its principles."

Some thoughts on belief in yourself.....

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue."

"The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn; the bird waits in the egg; and in the highest vision of the soul a waking angel stirs."

Lighthouse Stairwell, Hand Watercolors

This was a Wet Canvas weekend drawing event challenge, to do something in the style of M. C. Escher

I don't know if it was successful or not in that regard. The other challenge was to do a hand or foot, so that's the other drawing here.
For both I used a combination of media - ink, inktense watercolor pencils, graphtint pencils, and watercolor.

The inktense pencils are similar to watercolor pencils, but when you add a little water, the colors become very bright, so they're fun to use.

The graphtint pencils are like a regular pencil but with a slight tint of color to them.

It's nice to be challenged to do something you wouldn't ordinarily do, so I enjoy visiting Wet Canvas.

Butterfly Watercolor from "Futterby Exhibit", Roger Williams Zoo

This is a newly finished watercolor of one of the many beautiful butterflies at the Flutterby Exhibit at Roger Williams Zoo. I did the background around the butterfly in a very abstract way...something a little different. This is an 8 X 10" done on Arches 140 lb paper. SOLD

My thought for today has to do with thoughts....change the thoughts and you change the person. I may have used this Scripture before....it's one of my favorites....

"Be careful what you think, because your thoughts
run your life."
Proverbs 4:23

Watercolor Portrait of Little Girl

Watercolor portrait of a little girl finished Sunday it is an 8 X 10" artwork. I started this portrait the night my new great grand daughter was born.

Being a great grandmother brings me to thoughts on getting old, from Max Lucado in "Traveling Light".

"Aging is God's idea.....It's one of the ways he keeps us headed homeward.
We can't change the process, but
we can change our attitude....
What if we looked at an aging body as
we look at the growth of a tulip?
Do you ever see...gardeners weep as the bulb begins to weaken?
Of course not....
Tulip lovers rejoice the minute the bulb weakens.
"Watch that one," they say,
"it's about to blossom."
Could it be that heaven does the same?
The angels point ot our bodies. The more frail we become,
the more excited they become.
"Watch that lady in the hospital." they say.
"She's about to blossom."

Zebra Watercolor Painting

From a trip to the Roger Williams Zoo with my grandsons, this new artwork... a zebra in a more realistic tone than the others you can see below... is a 5 X 7 watercolor done on Arches 140 lb paper.

The thing I love about nature and animals is they are not striving to be anything but are in unity with their environment, no matter what it is....beautiful, inviting, at rest.

"Beauty itself is but the sensible image of the infinite"

Pink Crabapple Blossoms Watercolor Painting

This new watercolor painting of pink blossoms was just finished this evening. It is an 8 X 10" piece of artwork done on Arches 140 lb paper and is from a reference photo from Wet Canvas in their weekend drawing event.

In the painting process you sometimes come to a spot where you don't like what you're doing and there's a temptation to throw it all away, but I'm finding if I work past that point, it works out happily in the end. There's a lesson for us in there for a lot of things.

"Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."
...Calvin Coolidge

Thoughts from Max Lucado, "A Love Worth Giving"...

"The humble heart honors others. Is Jesus not our example? .......Each morning he gifts us with beauty. Each Sunday he calls us to his table. Each moment he dwells in our hearts."

Jaguar Watercolor Painting

This is an 11 X 15" watercolor done on 300 lb arches paper. .... from Wet Canvas weekend drawing event.

Beautiful thought from Max Lucado "And The Angels Were Silent".... on someday.....

"The enemy of risky love is a snake whose tongue has mastered the talk of deception. 'someday' he hisses. ....but you know the truth, don't you...even before I write it? .....'somedays' never come.... Go to the effort. Invest the time. Write the letter. Make the apology. Take the trip. Purchase the gift. Do it. The seized opportunity renders joy. The neglected brings regret."

"If we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is made perfect in us." I John 4:12

This is an 11 X 15" watercolor done on 300 lb arches paper.

"If you never did
You should.

These things are good."
